Assessment of the Possibilities of Implementing Higher Animal Welfare Requirements, Reducing GHG Emissions in Lithuanian Pig Farms, and the Prospects of Pig Farming in a 10-year Period

The main objective of this short-term research was to assess the prospects of Lithuanian pig farms over a 10-year period, implementing higher pig welfare requirements and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To achieve this objective EU legislation on higher pig welfare requirements were analysed and their future prospects and impact on pig farms were assessed; pig housing technologies of the prevailing pig farms were assessed; feed utilization efficiency was assessed in order to reduce GHG emissions, and feed and energy costs were assessed; the optimal size of a pig farm was determined so that the farm would be competitive and profitable; the prospects of Lithuanian pig farms for a 10-year period were prepared.
